The British Association for Lung Research (BALR) is a community for all types of respiratory scientists, from basic to clinical, to provide a platform to exchange ideas, create collaborations, and further pulmonary research. The BALR has provided a focus for exchange of ideas between all manner of respiratory researchers, basic scientist and clinician alike, to ferment collaboration and to further fundamental pulmonary research for over twenty years, thus fulfilling the initial aims of the society to promote respiratory research throughout the UK.
The BALR is a community for all types of respiratory scientists, from basic to clinical, to provide a platform to exchange ideas, create collaborations, and further pulmonary research. We are a registered charity and have been active for over thirty years, and are proud to support respiratory researchers in the UK and abroad.

Purchases and Refunds
Purchasing
When submitting your membership application, renewal or other order from mySociety, you are allowing the British Association for Lung Research and The Royal Society of Biology to use your personal details to fulfil your order. In the event of there being a problem with your order we will communicate with you via e-mail, telephone or letter.
Only bookings for events, subscriptions to our publications and membership related services are provided via this website. No goods or products are sold through this site (mySociety).
Transactions take place over a secure connection. Where applicable VAT is charged at the standard UK rate.
Cancellation and amendments
If you pay for a membership subscription, renewal or publication, you have in accordance with applicable EU and UK law a 7 day cooling off period during which you have the right to cancel and receive a refund. You don’t need to give a reason to cancel. If you do decide to cancel within the 7 days, we will refund your payment usually within 7 days, but no later than within 30 days of your cancellation.
Your statutory rights are not affected.

Who we are
The British Association for Lung Research is a registered charity (No. SC010151) and a community for all types of respiratory scientists, from basic to clinical, to provide a platform to exchange ideas, create collaborations, and further pulmonary research. We have been active for over thirty years, and are proud to support respiratory researchers in the UK and abroad. We host a fantastic annual summer meeting, allowing our members to come together in a relaxed atmosphere. We also host workshops on a manner of topics related to basic pulmonary research and techniques. We also provide awards and prizes at our summer meeting, and at other respiratory meetings, to support young scientists in sharing their research. The British Association for Lung Research has contracted the Royal Society of Biology to provide membership and related services to its members.
The Royal Society of Biology is a registered charity (No. 277981) and is incorporated by Royal Charter. The Royal Society of Biology is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (No. Z5761557) in the UK under the Data Protection Act 1998.
What we collect
The types of personal information we collect may include your title, first name, surname, gender, date of birth, your qualifications, home and work contact details (telephone, fax, street address, email address, credit card details or bank details) and your mailing address. We may also collect information relating to your employment, including where you are currently employed, your job title, areas of interest/expertise and your job function if this is relevant to your membership or membership of a special interest group. In applications for some categories of membership or special interest groups we ask you to identify a nominating person and/or referees and to provide contact information for them.
How we handle your personal information
The British Association for Lung Research and the Royal Society of Biology respect the privacy of members and website users, and aims to act consistently with the Data Protection Act, and the 8 principles of data protection.
Generally, The British Association for Lung Research and the Royal Society of Biology collect personal information directly from you when you:
- Deal with us in person, by telephone, letter, fax or email
- Fill out and submit a membership application form
- Submit any other information in connection with your application for membership, membership of a special interest group or renewal of membership or the purchase of other services
- Register for a publication subscription
- Make an enquiry
- Apply for a bursary or grant

We collect personal data to administer our activities, events, publications, services or grants and bursaries.
Maintaining the accuracy of data
Members can correct or update personal data using their online mySociety account or by contacting us by emailing theteam@balr.co.uk
Payment and bank details
Any information provided by you in connection with a Direct Debit payment or transaction regarding your credit or debit card numbers, expiry date and billing or delivery address will be used by us to process the transaction.
Credit card details are not stored on our servers, but are securely stored on the WorldPay payment gateway employed by us for the processing of card payments.
Use and disclosure
The policy of British Association for Lung Research and the Royal Society of Biology is not to disclose any personal information that we hold on you to any unrelated third party, except where you have given your express consent for us to do so or where required by law.
The British Association for Lung Research (or its committee members/representatives) may use your email address for the purpose of notifying you about products, services, events or activities of relevance to you. If you tell us that you do not wish us to use your personal information for a particular purpose, we will not do so.
We also collect email addresses from people who subscribe to our email lists. If you do not want to receive email from us in the future please let us know by sending an email to theteam@balr.co.uk
Personal information collected on this website will be used only for the purpose stated (such as the processing of membership or grant applications) and such information will be held for as long as necessary to fulfil the stated purpose. Personal data collected during the process of membership application will be kept indefinitely, in a secure database, for the purpose of lapsed membership campaigns.
The British Association for Lung Research (or its committee members/representatives) may, from time to time, email you with additional information considered to be relevant to your professional/scientific interests, but only to those who have given their agreement to receiving such communications.
Information that you supply to The British Association for Lung Research and/or the Royal Society of Biology through this website is held securely and strict security procedures are followed to prevent unauthorised access or use.
